Since 1982 Smith Fastener Co. has been applying coatings manufactured by the Whitford Corporation. We
have been fortunate to provide fasteners of all types to customers coast to coast in the United States, Europe, South Africa, Kuwait and Canada. Technical information on the1424 series can be found on the
Whitford Corporation’s website www.whitfordww.com. Data on this page has been taken from Whitford’s literature.
Xylan 1424 for fasteners is a waterborne /VOC compliant, resin bonded, thermally cured, single film dry lubricant. It is primarily intended for fasteners to prevent corrosion and facilitate makeup torque. Operating temperature range for continuous service ranges from -40 Degree F (-40 Degree C) to +360 Degree F (+180 Degree C) and can survive up to +450 Degree F (+232 Degree C) intermittently.
Fluoropolymer coatings have the lowest coefficient of friction of all known fastener coatings, which requires that "makeup torque" specifications be adjusted to compensate. You may see a reduction of makeup torque from 30 to 70 percent. Research and testing are essential to achieve optimum tightening torque. Please refer to the Whitford website and other websites that are available to help in recommending torque values.
The chart below illustrates the Xylan 1424’s chemical resistance features. Smith Fastener Co. will be glad
to coat sample parts for testing and evaluation. Xylan 1424 is available in many industrial colors.
